Serving The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation

Special Envoy of The Princess of Monaco Foundation South Africa
Advancing Water Safety, Youth Development & Humanitarian Programmes Across Underserved Communities

Serving as Special Envoy of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation has been one of the great honours of my career. For the past few years, I have worked alongside dedicated teams across South Africa to advance the Foundation's life-saving mission: preventing drowning through water safety education, supporting youth development through sport, and addressing the fundamental challenge of child hunger in communities where resources are scarce.

What has struck me most deeply about this work is how sport can serve as a catalyst for far broader impact. Teaching a child to swim is about confidence, opportunity, and breaking barriers. Supporting young rugby players from townships to compete internationally is about showing young people what's possible when someone believes in them.

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene's personal commitment to this work (rooted in her own background as an Olympic swimmer) has been inspiring to witness.

I am grateful to have contributed to work that saves lives and opens doors for young people who deserve every chance to succeed.

About The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation was established by Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene to prevent drowning and promote water safety, particularly among children in vulnerable communities. The Foundation operates internationally, with a significant focus on South Africa, where drowning rates remain tragically high and access to water safety education is limited.

As Special Envoy for South Africa, I worked with local partners, government agencies, and community organizations to deliver the Foundation's programmes across the country—from urban townships to remote rural regions.

Our Mission in South Africa

Water Safety & Drowning Prevention

We delivered swimming lessons, water safety courses, and aquatic sport activities to communities across South Africa, including some of the most remote and impoverished regions. Our programmes focused not only on teaching essential survival skills but also on building confidence and creating pathways to competitive swimming for talented young athletes.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children in South Africa. Through partnerships with schools, community centres, and local swimming clubs, we worked to change this reality—one child, one swimming lesson, one life at a time.

Key Initiatives & Impact

OurVisionTogether - Combating Child Hunger

In 2023, we launched the OurVisionTogether programme as the primary funding vehicle for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa. The initiative focused on eradicating child hunger in underserved communities—recognizing that children cannot learn, grow, or thrive without adequate nutrition.

The programme was anchored by a unique fundraising approach: 15 original art pieces specifically commissioned for the Foundation in partnership with Major-winning golf champion Louis Oosthuizen. These works raised significant funds while creating awareness of child hunger issues across South Africa.

Impact: Thousands of meals delivered to children in communities where food insecurity is a daily reality.

Inaugural Waterbike Challenge

The Foundation hosted the inaugural Waterbike Challenge in South Africa, designed to raise awareness of the Foundation's work and support Lifesaving South Africa—the national organization responsible for water safety education and beach patrol services.

The event brought together athletes, sponsors, and community supporters in a celebration of water sport and safety. Through media coverage, social engagement, and participant fundraising, the Waterbike Challenge generated over $250,000 worth of exposure for the Foundation and its mission.

Impact: Elevated national conversation around drowning prevention and water safety, while raising critical funds for lifesaving programmes.

Saint Devote Rugby Tournament - Blue Bulls Development Team

In partnership with the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, the Foundation sent a development team from South Africa to Monaco for the annual Saint Devote Tournament—one of the world's premier youth rugby competitions.

The South African side, representing the Blue Bulls Pretoria, competed against 20 teams from 17 countries at the historic Stade Louis II. The team emerged as champions, unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene, alongside the entire Princely Family and the Monaco Impi supporters, attended the matches—adding immense significance to the occasion. For young players from South African townships, the opportunity to compete on an international stage, represent their country, and meet royalty was transformative.

The 11th edition of the Saint Devote Tournament showcased not only the global reach of rugby but also the Foundation's commitment to using sport as a vehicle for youth development, cultural exchange, and opportunity.

Impact: Life-changing international experience for young South African athletes; strengthened rugby ties between Monaco and South Africa; demonstrated what's possible when talent meets opportunity.

Monaco U/16s Sevens Exchange Programme

The Foundation hosted the Monaco U/16s Sevens team in South Africa for a two-week cultural and sporting exchange. The young athletes from Monaco trained with South African teams, experienced township rugby programmes, and competed in the Boland 10s tournament—emerging as champions against four local schools and development teams.

Beyond the rugby pitch, the exchange programme fostered deep connections between young people from vastly different backgrounds. Monaco players visited South African schools, participated in community projects, and gained perspective on the challenges and resilience of young athletes in underserved communities.

South African players, in turn, saw what structured international rugby development looks like and formed friendships that transcended borders.

Impact: Cultural exchange, friendship, and mutual respect between young athletes; exposure to international rugby standards for South African players; unforgettable experiences for Monaco youth; strengthened Foundation relationships across both nations.

Reflections on the Work

What has made this work meaningful is not simply the programmes delivered or funds raised... it's the lives changed. I have watched children who could not swim gain confidence in the water and, with it, confidence in themselves. I have seen young rugby players from townships compete on international stages they never imagined reaching. I have witnessed communities rallying around the simple but profound idea that every child deserves safety, opportunity, and hope.

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene's vision for the Foundation is rooted in a belief that sport can save lives and transform futures. Having contributed to that mission across South Africa, I carry forward a deepened commitment to work that serves communities and creates lasting impact.

Gratitude

I am deeply grateful to Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene for the trust placed in me to serve as Special Envoy, to the Foundation staff and partners across South Africa for their dedication and passion, and to the children and families whose resilience and spirit continue to inspire.

As I transition from this role to focus on opportunities in Scotland, I remain committed to the principles that guided this work: that leadership should serve others, that success means little without positive impact, and that we are measured not by what we build for ourselves but by what we contribute to those who come after us.
